CONFIRMED: Michigan are bringing him back

Jaren Mangham’s time at Michigan State isn’t done.

The fifth-year senior running back announced via social media on Tuesday he’s returning to the Spartans to use his final season of eligibility.

Mangham, a Detroit native, spent the first two seasons of his college career at Colorado and then two more at South Florida before transferring to join the Spartans last year. The season didn’t go as planned as injuries limited him to 30 carries for 81 yards and seven catches for 37 yards in six games.

Returning to Michigan State will allow Mangham to play with his younger brother for another season. Sophomore Jaden Mangham is a starting safety who had 53 tackles and a team-high four interceptions this season. They both wore No. 1 in their first season playing together.

Mangham in late November said he was unsure what he would do after the season. His announcement on Tuesday came less than two weeks after senior leading receiver Montorie Foster stated his intention to return to the Spartans to use his last season of eligibility.

A former standout at Detroit Cass Tech, Mangham had 314 carries for 1,251 yards and 23 touchdowns in 32 games split between Colorado and South Florida. He rushed for career highs of 671 yards and 15 touchdowns in his first season with the Bulls in 2021 and then appeared in only four games the following year to keep a redshirt.

After entering the portal, Mangham transferred to Michigan State, which put him on the same team as his younger brother and reunited him with Mel Tucker, who coached him in 2019 at Colorado. Tucker was fired for cause in September and Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith was named Michigan State’s new head coach on Nov. 25, one day after the Spartans finished the season with a 4-8 record.
Mangham, 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, missed the first six games this season due to injury before returning and his workload gradually increased. He posted a season-high 35 yards on nine carries in a loss at Ohio State.
Michigan State’s roster continues to take shape under a new staff and the team is slated to return starting running back Nathan Carter. The UConn transfer and redshirt sophomore led the Spartans with 185 carries for 798 yards and four touchdowns this season on one of the worst offenses in the nation. Jalen Berger, the team’s starting running back in 2022, was limited to only five games and 25 carries due to injuries and is also in position to return, along with depth in the backfield.
