Sad News: Just In Browns Fire Two Assistant Coaches in Offense

Stump Mitchell, the running backs coach, and T.C. McCartney, the tight ends coach, have parted ways with the Browns. Alex Van Pelt, the offensive coordinator, is still under contract.

At the start of the 2024 offseason, head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Kevin  Sfatenski, is said to have made some adjustments to his offensive coaching staff.

According to a report from Josina Anderson, Stefanski, who guided the Browns to their second postseason appearance since taking over as head coach in 2020, has dismissed tight ends coach T.C. McCartney and fired running backs coach Stump Mitchell.

Anderson first said that Alex Van Pelt, the offensive coordinator, had also been sacked, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network subsequently revealed that Van Pelt was still employed.

“Some of the players are upset from the news,” Anderson observed.

According to Anderson, the adjustments took place on Tuesday, following the Browns’ historic feat of winning games with four different starting quarterbacks since 2015. Despite missing Deshaun Watson, Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb, and their top three offensive tackles to season-ending injuries, they finished 16th in the NFL in yards per game (335.9) and 10th in points per game (23.3).

Stefanski brought McCartney and Mitchell with him when he joined the team in 2020.

Since Stefanski took over as head coach, Mitchell has served as both the rushing game coordinator and the running backs coach. Despite losing Chubb to a season-ending injury in Week 2, the Browns concluded the previous season with 118.6 running yards per game, good for 12th in the league. In spite of the fact that his 4.0 yards per carry placed him 29th in the league among rushers with at least 100 runs, Jerome Ford was able to assume the starting role and lead the Browns with 813 rushing yards.

Tight end David Njoku had a career-best season in 2023 under McCartney’s direction. In his seven-year career, Njoku set career highs by finishing second on the Browns with 882 receiving yards and six touchdowns. McCartney was a member of the team in 2014 as well as having served as an offensive assistant in 2020–21.

Thanks to the outstanding play of quarterback Joe Flacco, who was 38 at the time, the Browns finished the regular season in second place with an 11-6 record and won four of their final four crucial games to secure a spot in the playoffs. Stefanski is the front-runner for NFL Coach of the Year after his incredible postseason performance.

The Texans put an unexpected stop to their winning streak on Saturday in the Wild Card Round, defeating them 45–14.

In the second half of the game, Flacco threw back-to-back pick sixes, effectively ending any chance the Browns had of rallying from a 10-point hole at the half.
