Ronald Powell, a former linebacker with the New Orleans Saints, passed unexpectedly at the age of 32.
His passing was revealed by the NFL Players Association on X, a website that was once known as Twitter.
Powell’s former Saints teammate Junior Galette reportedly confirmed the former player’s passing to Sports Illustrated. Galette said that his friend passed away on January 15, but he did not provide a cause of death. In 2014, he was a player for the New Orleans Saints with Powell. Additionally, he acknowledged Powell’s passing and sent his condolences on social media.
The former linebacker, who was a five-star recruit and the unanimous No. 1 prospect in 2010, attended Rancho Verde High School while growing up in Moreno Valley, California. After graduating from high school, he made the decision to play for the University of Florida Gators. He recorded seven sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 57 total tackles in his first two seasons. He was a Gators player from 2010 until 2013. He sustained numerous tears to his left ACL, which hindered his ability to play in subsequent games. The Saints selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft despite the fact that he was redshirted and only saw action in one game as a junior.
While he was able to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and Seattle Seahawks, he was unable to participate in the league during his 14-game rookie season with New Orleans due to injuries. After quitting the NFL in 2017, he attempted his luck with the Orlando Apollos in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football in 2019. He never got to play in a game after signing with the league because he was put on the waived/injured list before to the start of the season.
