The New York Yankees have already shocked the baseball world this offseason; can they do so again?

New York acquired one of baseball’s best players in a blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres for superstar slugger Juan Soto. The Yankees have also been working to improve other aspects of the organization.

The Yankees already look very different than they did at the end of the 2023 season. New York should already be considered one of the best teams in the American League, but adding another starting pitcher would be a significant boost.

New York could use at least one more starter to improve its depth and options. If the Yankees could sign another star instead of a mid-tier player, the club would benefit even more.

The Yankees have been linked several times to 2023 National League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, who is still available in free agency.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Yankees are the only team that has formally offered him a contract, despite the fact that no deal has been reached.

“The Yankees reportedly offered Snell a six-year, $150 million contract, but the reigning NL Cy Young winner turned it down, wanting either a higher average annual value – a deal worth at least $30 million per year – or a longer contract,” Feinsand said. “New York’s offer is the only actual offer that has been extended to Snell, according to a source, though a number of teams have expressed interest in the lefty.

“Many believe Snell is seeking a deal worth more than $200 million after winning his second Cy Young Award, a figure that hasn’t been out there to this point in the offseason. It remains to be seen whether the Yankees – who have since added Marcus Stroman to their rotation – will take another crack at Snell, but the (Los Angeles Angels) and (San Francisco Giants) could also get into the mix for the 31-year-old.”

It’s unclear what the Yankees will do, but don’t rule them out on the Snell sweepstakes.
