Greene underwent Tommy John surgery on his right (non-throwing) elbow less than four months ago, but his recovery period will be significantly shortened. Greene might be limited in some way during spring training, but Opening Day is anticipated to bring him up to speed.

For Detroit, who is depending on Greene as they aim to move up in the American League Central, that is undoubtedly good news. In an effort to advance, the team signed Jack Flaherty, traded for Mark Canha, and signed Kenta Maeda after finishing second in the American League Central the previous season.

The 23-year-old only appeared in 99 games in 2023 due to several ailments, but when healthy, he performed admirably. He stole seven bases and hit.288 with 11 home runs and 37 RBI. He and Spencer Torkelson round out manager A.J. Hinch’s young core of position players.

He debuted in the major leagues in 2022 and has 16 home runs and a slash line of.271/.335/.739.
