The Tennessee Volunteers are expecting to finally get the transfer portal news they’ve been waiting for for weeks.
According to 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong, LSU transfer offensive tackle Zalance Heard is set to join Tennessee as a portal addition.
The Vols are in desperate need of an offensive lineman after losing Gerald Mincey, a Florida transfer who began his career with the Vols in 2022 and 2023, via the transfer site.
Heard, a former five-star prospect, appeared in 12 games (including one start) as a true freshman for LSU last season.
The idea is that Heard, who is from Monroe, LA, will play left tackle for Tennessee in 2024, moving John Campbell from left to right tackle.
Campbell played left tackle for Tennessee last season after transferring from Miami. He tweeted a video earlier this week that looked to show the veteran offensive lineman exercising out of a right tackle stance, implying that he supports the position change.
The Vols might still benefit from more offensive line help through the transfer portal. The left guard position is unstable heading into the offseason, and while Tennessee has some possibilities on the roster (Andrej Karic, Vysen Lang, etc.), they’d be wise to try to grab a potential upgrade through the portal.
