Despite enrolling early at Alabama, Crimson Tide quarterback Dylan Lonergan did not play baseball as a right-handed pitcher last season. On Friday, first-year Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn provided an update on whether two sports are in the cards for the Snellville, Ga., native.

“There’s been a lot of changes over the last few weeks [in the football program],” said Vaughn. “The alterations that have occurred have been thoroughly documented. Dylan, for the time being, I believe, will concentrate on his football career. “He is extremely talented.”

Jason Jackson, the associate head coach and former pitching coach, has seen Lonergan in action and is a big fan. He was one of Georgia’s best high school baseball players, and he planned to play both sports in college. However, plans frequently alter. He has played one regular-season football game, completing two passes against Chattanooga on November 18.

Vaughn did not rule out the young signal caller’s eventual return to the diamond, leaving the decision to Lonergan. “What that implies for him in the long run is going to be mostly up to Dylan, and we’ll see how that plays out.

“We would really love to have him involved in what we’re doing. I believe he is a gifted child, but for the time being, he will concentrate on what lies ahead of him. That’s a reflection of who he is and what he’s truly earned over the last six, seven months on that football field.” Lonergan is not expected to be around “a ton,” but Vaughn welcomes him at any moment.
