Kalen DeBoer, the University of Alabama’s new head football coach, took over for the legendary Nick Saban about two weeks ago. Coach DeBoer has spent the most of his time in Tuscaloosa and on the recruiting trail.
Coach DeBoer appeared on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Thursday to discuss taking over the Crimson Tide and his experiences in the previous two weeks.
Patrick would ask him about re-recruiting the current Alabama football roster, especially in the era of the transfer portal, and Coach DeBoer would remark how satisfied he was with his staff for doing so.
“Absolutely. That’s a large part of it. I believe that recruiting our own roster has been among of our coaches’ best efforts thus far. And it’s ridiculous to say that, but I believe that’s the truth regardless, and I believe it’s much higher today with everything. So I’m very proud of how our boys – and I mean our squad – have accepted our coaching staff and myself. I believe we have done an excellent job of retaining the core, or nucleus, of those involved in this programme. There are many wonderfulPlayers want this area to be excellent. It certainly caught them off guard, and it hit them hard when Coach Saban retired, which is a large part of why they moved here. But they also come here to wear the Alabama colours, and they’ve been really responsive to me, holding each other, and wanting to carry on the tradition of this magnificent place.”
While fans and analysts around the country love to talk about all of the losses that Alabama’s roster has had, and it has been quite a few when you take a deeper look at the roster, the Crimson Tide still has one of the best rosters from top to bottom in the country. The fact that Coach DeBoer and his staff were able to keep a large portion of the roster together is a great accomplishment early on in the DeBoer era.
