Rex Burkhead, a former running back for the Houston Texans, declared his retirement on social media on Monday. After being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the sixth-round pick (number 190 overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft, Burkhead played for ten seasons.

Burkhead left the Bengals after four seasons and signed with the New England Patriots in 2017. During the Bill Belichick and Tom Brady dynasty, Burkhead was a key player in the team’s championship victory.
After spending four seasons playing in New England, Burkhead signed with the Texans in 2021. Burkhead ran for 507 yards on 148 carries and three touchdowns in two seasons.
In December 2021, he had his greatest game as the Texans defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16. Burkhead had 149 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns in the game’s conclusion.
Burkhead’s efforts contributed to the final triumph for previous head coach David Culley. He took over as the starting back for a position group that also included Phillip Lindsay and David Johnson.

After Dameon Pierce’s rise to prominence in his final season with the Texans in 2022, his role declined. Burkhead finishes his ten-year career with 17 touchdowns and 1,908 yards on 488 attempts.
For Burkhead, the 2021 season was a career year. With 427 yards and three touchdowns, he was the Texans’ leading rusher at the end of the season.
