Paul Mariner, a former striker for Ipswich Town and England, passed away at the age of 68.
During a heyday for Ipswich that saw them win the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981, Mariner scored 139 goals in 339 games.
He played for Plymouth, Arsenal, and Portsmouth in addition to earning 35 caps for England and 13 goals for the national team.Mariner was fighting a brain tumor.
“We regret to inform you that Paul passed away peacefully on July 9 surrounded by his family, following a brief battle with brain cancer,” his family said in a statement.
“We would want to express our gratitude to everyone who visited him throughout his sickness and for their supportive words, which meant a lot to both of us.
“We as a family will always be indebted to the NHS for the amazing care Jack received when he most needed it. A special thank you goes to you for that.
“Paul lived a full life and was fortunate enough to represent a group of fantastic football clubs as well as his country, all of which meant the world to him.
“Anyone who knew Paul will attest to his fantastic sense of humour, his passion for life and for his work.
“He will be sorely missed by everyone who was ever around him and by those most close to him.””We are devastated to hear the news of Town legend Paul Mariner’s passing at the age of 68,” wrote an Ipswich tweet. Between 1977 and 1985, Mariner played for England, tallying 13 goals. We are sending our condolences to his friends, family, and former clubs.
Terry Butcher, a former England and Ipswich teammate, also his condolences. “I remember him standing there, his chest out, his chin high, he was standing to attention,” Butcher said to Sky Sports News. He was flawless. That was the model I aimed to emulate.
“Playing for England meant everything to him.” He had complete devotion to England.”The Argyle family is devastated to learn of the passing of legendary striker Paul Mariner,” the club said in a statement.
“Paul’s family and friends have our deepest condolences and best wishes during this tragic time,” said the entire club.
The chairman of the League Managers Association, Howard Wilkinson, praised Mariner’s fervor.
Wilkinson stated: “Anyone who received praise from Sir Bobby Robson is deserving of special acknowledgement, and Paul’s goal total says it all about his ability as a striker.””As a manager, I managed his teams and I recall Paul as a formidable foe and excellent team member. His performances were filled with passion and excitement for the game.
Paul made a significant impact on football as a player and coach for his club and country. I am sorry to hear of his departure, since it is a big loss to the game.
