For a few days now, rumors have been circulating that Kevin Guskiewicz, the 12th Chancellor of the North Carolina Tar Heels, may be leaving his current role. Guskiewicz has been linked to the Michigan State presidency position for a while; most recently, it was revealed that he was the only contender still standing.
Even if he decides not to accept the Michigan State position, Guskiewicz is likely to depart his position with the University of Chapel Hill, according to an InsideCarolina story published on Friday afternoon.Guskiewicz played a significant role in the decision to realign the North Carolina Tar Heels athletics program, and there have been rumors that this may be his last year as an academic owing to disagreements with the University’s Board of Trustees on this choice.
Since assuming the role in an interim capacity in February 2019, Guskiewicz has served as the Chancellor. If and when Guskiewicz leaves North Carolina, three people are thought to be in the running for the temporary position. InsideCarolina names Lee Roberts, Chris Clemens, and Malcolm Turner as those contenders.
No matter which candidate takes the role, we can assume the new chancellor will have a significant impact on the new realignment of college athletics and if the North Carolina Tar Heels make a move outside of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
