The Panthers have responded to star half Jarome Luai’s subtle jibe at coach Ivan Cleary, who said rival clubs would be taking a “risk” in acquiring him as a primary playmaker.
Penrith powerbrokers have proposed a two-year extension for $1.7 million to extend his stay at the base of the mountain.
However, he entered the open market on November 1 and will get offers from clubs worth more than $1 million per season, with the potential to become a vital playmaker for their respective teams.
On Thursday, Luai took to Instagram, uploading an anime-style photo of himself with the tagline ‘Know Your Worth’.
He complemented the tweet with 50 Cent’s Hustler’s Ambition, the title single from the rapper’s 2005 feature film Get Rich Or Die Tryin’.
When approached by the Daily Telegraph, Panthers football CEO Matt Cameron was aware of the post.
“I’ve seen it, we haven’t engaged with Jarome about it,” Cameron went on to say.
“The coach had been absent; he returned the day before yesterday. I assume the coach had contacted him. We met with him three weeks ago, and all parties were very open. Ivan’s comments yesterday were things we’d been talking about..
“The post is exactly what it is…” I do not live in a social media environment. We will speak with Jarome and continue the conversation.”
Luai has formed a highly successful halves combo with Nathan Cleary, and the two have won the trophy for the previous three seasons.
However, Cleary believes his five-eighth “belongs” at the Panthers, but said the offers that could be tabled would be difficult to refuse..
