Santa Clara, California. Before the San Francisco 49ers began their latest postseason run, coach Kyle Shanahan met with the team’s analytics group to discuss probable scenarios for a game that could go into overtime.
In March 2022, the NFL implemented new postseason overtime rules that would allow each team to have a possession regardless of what the team with the ball first did (until a defensive score occurs). However, the Niners had not played an overtime game in the playoffs during that span.
