Iowa has long been known as a winning programme with elite defence and special teams under long-time coach Kirk Ferentz. At the very least, the results have been consistent. In 24 seasons under Ferentz, the Hawkeyes have won an average of nearly eight games per year, often with mediocre offensive production.
Iowa’s offensive woes reached a point in eight games in 2023 that prompted the team to begin planning a change on that side of the ball. The school announced on Monday that offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, son of Kirk, will not return to the Hawkeyes coaching staff in 2024.
Score at least 25 points per game (including a bowl game) by any means, including defence and special teams, and win seven games (including a bowl game) in 2023 to ensure his contract is renewed in 2024.
The revised contract came after Iowa’s offence struggled during the 2022 season, finishing 123rd nationally while averaging 17.7 points and 156.7 yards passing per game. Even worse, Iowa finished 130th out of 131 FBS teams in total offence, averaging 256.1 yards per game.
