It’s understood that the NRL legend suffered a heart attack while cycling on Tuesday morning.
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs CEO Andrew Hill led the tributes to Folkes, who was named Dally M coach of the year in 2004.
“The club is shocked and saddened at the news of the passing of Bulldogs legend Steve Folkes,” Hill said in a statement. “Steve played such a major part in the history of the Bulldogs, both as a player and coach, and was without doubt one of the giants of the club.
“Steve symbolised everything that the Bulldogs stand for and was respected throughout the game for his toughness and determination. He never took a backward step and was loved by the fans for his courage and commitment to the club.
“His legacy as a Bulldog and what he did for the club will never be forgotten and our hearts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.
“The club asks that everyone respect the privacy of the family during this time.”
Folkes played 245 games for Canterbury between 1978 and 1991, winning three premierships. A few years after his retirement, Folkes rejoined his former team as coach, leading the Bulldogs to their 2004 Grand Final win over the Roosters.
Triple M’s Mark Geyer said he was “shattered” to hear of Folkes’ death.
“Steve Folkes was one of the rugby league good guys,” he said on Tuesday afternoon. “Only a little guy for a second rower but jeez he could hit like an axe.”
