By renegotiating the deal of edge rusher Rashan Gary on Monday, the Packers were able to free up some budget room. They might still free up more by cutting veteran left tackle David Bakhtiari.
Even if Bakhtiari hadn’t missed 38 of the team’s previous 51 regular season games due to knee problems, his cap number would still be over $40 million. Cutting him would free up over $20 million in cap space, but the organization hasn’t decided what to do with Bakhtiari yet, General Manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters on Tuesday.
However, Gutekunst did hint that Bakhtiari’s current cap figure might prevent the team from keeping him on the roster into the upcoming league season. There doesn’t seem to be much for the Packers to consider regarding Bakhtiari’s future, but it will be at least a little bit longer before anything is official in Green Bay. Gutekunst stated, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, that he would “like to have a decision before that.”
