The NRL’s decision to punish Luciano Leilua for two matches has inflicted a severe blow to the St George Illawarra Dragons.
Leilua received a violation notice from the NRL after he neglected to inform the NRL integrity unit or his former team, the North Queensland Cowboys, about a low-range drinking offense.
According to Michael Carayannis of The Daily Telegraph, the Dragons were informed of the event when they just signed him, having received a tip from the NRL.
According to Carayannis, “The Dragons have inherited this situation” on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“They were informed about it during their conversations with Leilua because the NRL had been hinted at the possibility of an impending ban.”
“Leilua’s failure to inform the Cowboys or the NRL about his charge is the reason.”
It wasn’t until he showed up at Townsville Court that he was noticed by a local journalist.
“Leilua has now been subject to a multiple game ban as a result of his failure to disclose the charge in accordance with NRL regulations.”
Without Leilua, Greg Alexander of SEN thinks it will be difficult for the Dragons to win their first two games of the season.
