EUGENE, Oregon — Dan Lanning, head football coach at the University of Oregon, will receive a contract extension through 2028, increasing his salary from $4.7 million to $7 million this season, the school announced on Thursday.
The University of Oregon Board of Trustees unanimously approved the extension during a conference call on Thursday.
Lanning, 37, will join Oregon in 2021 after four seasons at Georgia, three of which he served as defensive coordinator. In his first season in Eugene, he guided the Ducks to a 10-3 record and a bowl victory over North Carolina. He’s also built two strong recruiting classes for Oregon. According to 247Sports, his 2022 and 2023 classes were ranked 13th and eighth, respectively.
According to The Athletic, Lanning’s compensation is totally guaranteed and will reach $8 million by 2028. His annual income includes $1 million in deferred compensation. His buyout to leave Oregon has increased to $20 million; if Oregon fires Lanning, he will be owed the full amount of his contract. According to The Athletic, Lanning will receive a one-year extension if he wins 10 regular-season games.
“Coach Lanning and his family enjoy being part of this community. During Thursday’s conference call, University of Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens stated, “Obviously, they’ve established roots.” “They’ve engaged at a level that we haven’t seen since the (Rich) Bro(Mike) Bellottioks- era, and it’s tremendously significant to our community. And Dan, Sauphia, and their children have made that type of dedication, demonstrating that this is a mutual commitment, which is vital to us.”
