Lindy Ruff’s three-year, five-month tenure as head coach of the New Jersey Devils terminated earlier this week. After one postseason trip and a 128-125-28, Ruff was finally put out of his misery in what has been a dreadful season.

What the organisation does between now and next October will most likely dictate the future of this franchise and its young core for the next decade. We have extensively documented what went wrong, what went right, some of the ramifications, and even who the next man behind the bench could be.

With Ruff out and Travis Green serving as interim head coach for the rest of the season, general manager Tom Fitzgerald will begin the most critical coaching search of his career. That being said, after the season is over and the dust settles, there may not be a finer job opportunity than the Devils’.
