DJ Lagway, the Gators’ most sought-after recruit since Tim Tebow, is a rookie quarterback. On Thursday, he made his first walk off the UF practice field, his perspiration shimmering against an orange and blue sunset.

In Billy Napier’s third season at Florida, a new era has dawned, and Lagway is the bait that so many Gators supporters are casting their dreams for a better future and a trip back to the top on. They think it will not be long before Lagway receives his statue outside of the swamp and wins a Heisman Trophy.

Certainly, you’ve seen openings to articles on the Next Big Thing that resemble the first two paragraphs above. After that, the story takes you on a surprising journey. To be clear, Lagway is an integral part of this tale and the Gators’ future, but so is Florida’s QB1, whose presence at the first practice of spring camp Thursday was (almost) equally newsworthy. The last time we saw Graham Mertz on the field, he was in excruciating pain after breaking his collarbone last season at Missouri.
