BREAKING NEWS: He is also fired due to impertinent fraction

The New Jersey Devils designated assistant Travis Green as their temporary coach for the remainder of the season after firing coach Lindy Ruff on Monday.

With little over 20 games remaining, general manager Tom Fitzgerald made the unexpected decision. After dropping five straight games, the Devils are now eight points behind the two Eastern Conference wild-card places and seven points behind Philadelphia, their opponent in the Metropolitan Division, and out of postseason contention.

Ruff, 64, had been a member of the team for four seasons. The Devils had high hopes heading into the season to make another run in the playoffs after losing to Carolina in the second round previous year.
