Trey Galloway was unhappy when a late-season knee injury sidelined him for Indiana’s Big Ten Tournament run, but he’s now focused on his recovery and assisting coach Mike Woodson in recruiting next year’s group.

Minneapolis, Minnesota — Trey Galloway’s injury was the final nail in the coffin for Indiana in an injury-plagued season.

The senior guard had a left knee injury prior to the Michigan State game and played seven minutes before leaving in pain. According to sources, Galloway has a meniscus injury and has not yet been ruled out for the NCAA Tournament, even if the team won the Big Ten Tournament.

But without Galloway, Indiana’s challenge was too great to overcome. No. 3 seed Nebraska made 14 3-pointers in Friday’s Big Ten Tournament semifinal game, and a 17-0 run at the conclusion of the first half was the difference in the Hoosiers’ 93-66 defeat. Sources revealed that if Indiana is invited to the NIT, it will decline.

“It hurts because we got hot at the right time,” Galloway said Friday in the Indiana locker room following the victory. “Having (Xavier Johnson) back was critical for our team, and we were clicking at the right time. I believe that having me go like that disturbs things and makes it difficult because I am an important member of our team.

“I’m really upset that I wasn’t able to be there for the lads and compete in this event. But the good news is that I have another chance to return next year, which is exactly what we are aiming for. We’re going to improve this summer and become ready.

Galloway’s meniscus issue will necessitate offseason surgery. But he feels he will be able to return to his senior year form, when he was a key playmaker and defender for the Hoosiers, averaging 10.6 points and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 46.6% from the field. Galloway has 11-plus assists in three of the last seven games, showing more ease than ever leading the show as Indiana’s point guard.
