March 5: Will Giolito’s injury force the Red Sox to step up their pursuit of Montgomery?
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, free-agent Lucas Giolito may miss the 2024 season due to a partially damaged UCL and flexor strain. The Red Sox already have a limited rotation.
Giolito’s injury is likely to fuel talk regarding Boston’s pursuit of free-agent lefty Jordan Montgomery. The organisation has been in contact with Montgomery for months, and manager Alex Cora said on Feb. 26 that the team met with Montgomery over Zoom the weekend before Spring Training.
With Giolito out, it remains to be known how the Red Sox will go. On the one hand, Giolito’s injury has made their rotation demands more apparent. On the other hand, ownership may decide it is not worth making another significant investment with the team looking like a borderline postseason contender at most, even if the Red Sox sign Montgomery.
