Latest news: Devil Player Announces Retirement from NHL

Simmonds played in 61 games for the Devils in the 2019-20 season.

Wayne Simmonds, a former forward for the New Jersey Devils, has announced his retirement from the NHL at the age of 35.

On July 1, 2019, the Scarborough, Ontario native signed a one-year contract with the Devils worth $5 million. He played 61 games for New Jersey and finished with 24 points (eight goals and 16 assists).

Simmonds made his Prudential Centre debut alongside Jack Hughes and P.K. Subban. In November 2019, he scored his first goal for the Devils against the Philadelphia Flyers, with Hughes assisting.

After Simmonds was acquired, former Devils captain Bryce Salvador discussed how the rugged winger may help young Hughes.

“Adding a guy like Wayne Simmonds is going to help create some room for (Hughes) out there,” Salvador said in a statement. “That was a key acquisition by (general manager) Ray Shero, by adding Simmonds because it’s going to allow (Hughes) to be more comfortable.”

Hughes spent a portion of his rookie season on a line with Simmonds and Jesper Boqvist. Simmonds was on the ice when Hughes scored his first NHL goal, and the winger and first-round pick also assisted on Boqvist’s NHL debut goal against Kaapo Kahkonen.

Simmonds defended Hughes when required. He was widely considered Hughes’s on-ice protector when he was moved to the Buffalo Sabres in return for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
