Maryland native Cowart was chosen by New England in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. He started all 14 of the games he played in 2020, tallying 27 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack after making five appearances in his rookie season, all as a reserve.

Cowart was cut by the Patriots on July 22, 2022, following his injury-related absence from the 2021 season. The Colts then claimed him. The 6-3, 300-pound player made appearances in all 17 Indianapolis games, recording 12 tackles and 2 tackles for loss.

Cowart played for the Chiefs during the offseason last year, the Texans during training camp, and the Dolphins over the majority of the season.
