Here’s where we shouldn’t mince words: It’s highly unlikely that the National League representative in the World Series this year will emerge from the Central Division. I doubt any of you reading this are racing to bet your life savings on any of the five teams in this division to go deep come October, even though it is true that anything is possible in the world of baseball as long as you make it to the postseason. That said, you could argue for any team to win this division, which makes it an intriguing one to watch.
Indeed, the Pittsburgh Pirates are included in that. Apart from a three-year span of comparatively great success during which the Pirates played.
Right now, the Pirates have a lot to like: Oneil Cruz is one of the most exciting young players in the game, Ke’Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds are dependable cornerstones, Jack Suwinski is another talented young player, and Henry Davis is a young player who could develop into a star behind the plate. Squinting will show you a scene in which everything goes perfectly and this team performs like a miracle. I reiterate: all other things having to go wrong for this to also be the case. Again, this probably won’t be the Pirates’ year, but at least Pittsburgh’s baseball fans can begin to feel some sort of hope again.
