
Over their last two extended road trips, the Red Wings lost their first games due to poor first-period play, the same slow start that plagued them for the majority of the previous ten games. As they prepare for a five-game road trip in the midst of the wild card chase, their beginnings could have an impact on the outcome.

“It sounds like a cliche but not only is it a long road trip, the calibre of opponent on the road trip and we’re in survival mode — we gotta try and eat every point possible,” Derek Lalonde, the Detroit Red Wings coach, said. “Then we have an opportunity tomorrow against a (Nashville) club that hasn’t allowed many points. So that will be a great task for us.
