The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did the right thing by retaining their most prominent free agents.
The Bucs returned Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans to an offence that appears to be the most stable in the NFC South.
They kept team veteran Lavonte David at linebacker while also improving the defense’s back end with the arrival of Jordan Whitehead.
If both players perform at their peak, the Whitehead-Antoine Winfield Jr. safety tandem has the potential to be the finest in the NFL.
Tampa Bay should be applauded for retaining its players while also enhancing its roster, which should make them the clear preseason favourite to win the NFC South.
Mayfield signed a three-year, $100 million contract following his great season in 2023.
Mayfield revitalised his career with a 4,000-yard season, propelling the Bucs to the divisional round.
Following last season’s success, the contract was an easy decision for both parties.
Tampa Bay did not have to compete in the free agent market for a new quarterback, and Mayfield had more long-term stability than in previous seasons.
The Bucs may now build on their 2023 success without bringing a large number of new faces.
That should help the franchise get out to a fast start, but Atlanta and Carolina may need a few games to adjust to their new head coaches in the NFC South.
