Murphy (oblique) is set to be placed by the Braves on IL Philadelphia. — Following a left oblique strain he suffered during a swing in the seventh inning of the Braves’ 9-3 Opening Day victory over the Phillies on Friday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park, Sean Murphy will be sidelined for at least a few weeks.

Murphy swung at a ball from Philadelphia reliever Matt Strahm and missed, then dropped his bat and grasped at his left side. Murphy conferred briefly with the team’s medical staff before making his way toward the bench.

“We will examine him the following day and determine the meaning of the pictures,” Braves manager Brian Snitker stated following the game. “I feel terrible for him. It was just one of those odd things that happens in baseball, but he had a really terrific finale to his spring and was feeling pretty good.

In Murphy’s absence, Atlanta’s regular catcher will be Travis d’Arnaud. Murphy represented the Braves in the All-Star Game of the previous season, and d’Arnaud was chosen an All-Star in 2022.

Murphy’s roster place is anticipated to be taken by Chadwick Tromp, who will be promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett to act as d’Arnaud’s backup.
