Thursday’s Minnesota Twins home opener will be a little different this year. Dick Bremer, the Twins’ TV voice for 40 years, announced his retirement at the end of last season.

Bremer, who currently serves as a special assistant in the organization’s front office, threw out the first pitch on Thursday. He has previously been on MPR News to discuss baseball with Minnesota Now anchor Cathy Wurzer.

How bizarre has it been not to be on the radio for spring training and the home opener?

Yeah, it’s been unusual in all the expected ways; I felt a little out of place, I think, or confused what to do with my time in January when I wasn’t on the Twins caravan, which is a distinctively Minnesota Twins thing for the first time in four decades.

Then, like everyone else in the Upper Midwest, I had to cope with a snowfall at the end of March instead of being in Fort Myers. And now we have an opening day, and that’s all part of it, right? Everyone, regardless of their profession, has a transition when they retire.
