Ime Udoka made his first trip back to Boston on Saturday night following his infractions and subsequent suspension that resulted in his departure from the Boston Celtics.
Before the game, the team’s former bench boss talked about his biggest regret in life—letting people down—and said, “Obviously, (I) wanted a chance to run it back and do it again with a group that you feel you can build and grow
Joe Mazzulla, 34, was thrown from the bench to become the youngest head coach in the NBA when he was fired five days before training camp the previous season.
Players said before, during, and after the 2022–23 season that they felt misinformed about what transpired due to the circumstances surrounding his departure, which included the team attempting to safeguard all parties, including themselves, legally.
Udoka expressed it clearly, saying, “I would say they lied to you guys. At least some of them were aware of it. They would obviously not have shared anything in public if I had spoken with them. So, everyone who needed to knowknew.”
After the Celtics defeated the Houston Rockets, 145-113, with a game-high 32 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks, Jaylen Brown said of Udoka’s remarks, “It was definitely a weird process.”
“We, kind of, knew what was going on, but then, there was, like, a time where we were hearing speculation that there was like more to it,” the two-time All-Star said. “And as it happened, it wasn’t— it wasn’t anything different from what we already knew. But, unquestionably, a strange circumstance of some sort. Overall though, I’m simply glad to have him back on his feet and coaching on the sidelines, where he belongs. It was also satisfying to see that everything worked out for everyone involved.”
