The end of the Jonathan Smith period is particularly upsetting for OSU students due to his history in Corvallis and at the university. Smith, a lowly walk-on quarterback, led the Beavers to their best season, defeating Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl more than 20 years ago. He is credited with turning around the football program after returning as a coach.

“I’m a little disappointed to be honest; he came in to help change the team, and I believe he did some, but he didn’t finish the job, and it’s a little sad to see him go,” said Jack Hansberry, another OSU student.

There may be sadness on campus, but other students and Beaver fans
