Less than a week ago, Cayden Green publicly welcomed Oklahoma’s newest offensive lineman, Michigan State transfer Spencer Brown. On Tuesday, the promising freshman was glaringly absent from the Sooners’ bowl practice on the fields surrounding Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
Green left the program shortly after 1 p.m., electing to use the transfer link instead. It was an unexpected choice that changed the picture of Oklahoma’s offensive line heading into the program’s first SEC season.
“It’s finals week; I just assumed he was taking a test,” senior right guard McKade Mettauer explained after practice Tuesday. “But that is for Coach B (offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh) to discuss. I haven’t seen or spoken to him.
Mettauer’s views were mirrored by several Oklahoma teammates during Tuesday’s practice, as Green’s decision caught many in the program off guard and came as a surprise to Sooners players as they exited the practice field.
“Honestly, we haven’t heard anything about that, really,” starting quarterback Jackson Arnold said. “That is for the coaches to say. I truly don’t know anything about that.
