From the minute quarterback J.J. McCarthy declared his desire to enter the NFL Draft, curiosity over who would replace him became a major theme throughout Michigan’s offseason. Was McCarthy’s heir already on the Wolverines roster? Or does first-year head coach Sherrone Moore, who succeeded Jim Harbaugh, need to search through the transfer portal to find a potential starter?
Several months later, after Michigan’s spring game, the same line of questioning was leveled at offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell, who Moore had elevated from quarterbacks coach. Campbell told reporters that adding another signal-caller “is not part of our thought process right now.” He snarled in response to a follow-up query.
