Joe Barry, the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, was let go, an insider told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Two days before to the termination, Packers coach Matt LaFleur declared he was “going to go through the process at my own pace” while declining to comment on Barry’s employment situation. In 2023, the Packers’ third season under Barry was marked by defensive struggles; they tied for 17th place in overall defense and 28th place in rushing defense.
Following a Week 15 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who amassed 34 scores and 452 yards of offense in Green Bay, Barry came under intense scrutiny. At the moment, LaFleur supported Barry and declared he would not alter his defensive coaching throughout the season.
The Packers’ decision to terminate Barry was initially announced on NFL Network on Wednesday.
Barry, who was brought on in 2021 to succeed Mike Pettine, was similarly criticized the previous season, largely for the Packers’ failure to halt the run.
In addition to serving as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2007 to 2008 and the Washington Commanders from 2015 to 2016, Barry has been an NFL assistant coach since 2000.
