Bloomington, IN – July 15, 2024 – The Indiana Hoosiers are celebrating a significant milestone as they honor Coach Mike Woodson for his remarkable 30 years of dedication and success. A special event was held at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall to commemorate Coach Woodson’s extraordinary contributions to Indiana University basketball.
Coach Woodson, a Hoosier legend both as a player and a coach, has been a pillar of the Indiana basketball community. His journey with the Hoosiers began as a standout player in the late 1970s, leading the team to numerous victories and earning All-American honors. After a successful NBA career, Woodson returned to Bloomington in 2021 to take the helm as head coach, bringing his wealth of experience and passion for the game back to his alma mater.
Under Coach Woodson’s leadership, the Hoosiers have experienced a resurgence, with multiple NCAA tournament appearances and Big Ten championships. His commitment to developing young talent and fostering a culture of excellence has been instrumental in the program’s success.
The celebration featured heartfelt tributes from former players, colleagues, and fans. Among the highlights were speeches from basketball legends who played under Coach Woodson, sharing stories of his mentorship and the lasting impact he has had on their lives and careers.
“Coach Woodson is more than a coach; he’s a mentor and a father figure to so many of us,” said former Hoosier star and NBA player Victor Oladipo. “His dedication, wisdom, and love for the game have inspired us all to be better players and better people.”

University President Pamela Whitten presented Coach Woodson with a commemorative plaque and announced the establishment of the “Mike Woodson Scholarship Fund,” which will support student-athletes who exemplify the values of hard work, leadership, and dedication that Coach Woodson has embodied throughout his career.
In his address to the audience, an emotional Coach Woodson expressed his gratitude for the support and love he has received from the Hoosier community over the years.
“Being a part of this incredible program has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Woodson said. “I am deeply humbled by this recognition and grateful for the opportunity to give back to the university that has given me so much. Here’s to many more years of Hoosier success!”
