Quarterback Derek Carr of the New Orleans Saints is starting his second season in the black and gold uniform. Carr revealed how close he was to signing with an AFC East team during the offseason during a recent appearance on the Pardon My Take Podcast.
JOINING THE AFC EAST, CARR?
“I had the option to sign with the Jets.” For me, it was simply not the appropriate moment. “I still needed to hear from four or five teams,” Carr said to PFT Commenter and podcast host Dan “Big Cat” Katz. He went on, “It was like, ‘Look, man, we’d love to have you,'” when he and Jets coach Robert Saleh were sitting there. You have the last say.”
The four-time Pro Bowl player expressed his admiration for Jets head coach Robert Saleh. “I think I am Saleh’s biggest admirer. Even if he wasn’t my coach, I would gladly race through any obstacle for him. Yes, sir, I would comply if he said, “I need you to do this.”
SETTLING AMONG THE SAINTS
In the end, Carr agreed to a $150 million, four-year contract with the Saints in 2023. By adding former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Jets made a change of direction. Carr had a difficult start in New Orleans last season, but he had a terrific end to the year.
