There was a bright and shiny object causing a stir in Cape Cod over the weekend, much to the delight of Massachusetts hockey fans.

The shiny object was the prized gift of Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston: The NHL’s Stanley Cup. The colors surrounding it, however, weren’t the Black and Gold of Boston Bruins fans, but the red, blue and purple of a couple Panthers programs near and dear to a Western Mass hockey family.

The Cup was in the Bay State this weekend because Paul Fenton and his son, P.J. brought it home to celebrate their time with the most popular trophy in sports with family and friends. The Fentons are both members of the Stanley Cup winning Florida Panthers organization.

Paul, the Senior Advisor to the General Manager with the Panthers, is a Springfield native and was a standout with the Cathedral High School Panthers hockey team before heading off to Boston to star as a BU Terrier. He then spent a lengthy career in the NHL in the 1980s and early 90s, playing for the Whalers, Rangers, Kings, Jets, Maple Leafs, Flames and Sharks. He’s made post-playing career executive stints with the Ducks, Wild and Predators before landing in Florida in 2020.The festivities were held at Captain’s Golf Course in Brewster, Mass., where dozens of friends and family members attended from all corners of the state. As is tradition with the world’s most iconic trophy, Cup-winners drink their beverage of choice out of the top of the trophy, a challenge the Fenton clan took head on.
