Logan Thomas is back with the San Francisco 49ers, just two weeks after the team released the veteran tight end. Thomas, who spent one year in Detroit, signed with the 49ers before summer break, after the franchise failed to sign current Lions tight end Brock Wright away in restricted free agency.
Thomas’ one season in Detroit came early in his switch from quarterback to tight end. He was a star quarterback while at Virginia Tech, and was drafted in 2014′s fourth round by the Arizona Cardinals. He spent his rookie season under center, appearing in two games, completing one-of-nine passes for 81 yards and one touchdown in the process for the Cardinals. After not appearing in a game for three seasons, he re-appeared as a tight end with the Buffalo Bills before flashing even more at the position in 2019 in Detroit……The 6-foot-6 tight end caught 16 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown for the Lions, then turned that into a highly-productive four-year stint with the Washington Commanders. Thomas managed 55 receptions for 496 yards and four touchdowns last season amid Washington’s seemingly-endless quarterback juggling.Back here in Detroit, the Lions are feeling pretty, pretty good about their tight end situation. They have stud second-year option Sam LaPorta leading the way, and managed to keep Wright in town despite a strong sheet from the 49ers over the offseason. Shane Zylstra is back after missing all of last season, and appears to have played his way onto the roster, with James Mitchell, Parker Hesse and Sean McKeon fighting for spots.
