Hawthorn midfielder Will Day has been ruled out of Friday night’s Semi Final against Port Adelaide.

The 23-year-old was subbed out of Hawthorn’s Round 23 match following an incident in the first quarter of that game.

While Day has continued to make progress in his recovery from the Sternoclavicular Joint (SC) injury, Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge ruled out a return to play this week.

Burge also provided updates on Cam Mackenzies’s hamstring injury and Sam Frost’s foot injury in the club’s Nissan Injury Update.

Will Day (SC Joint) – TBC

“He’s doing a lot of non-contact training at the moment and plenty of conditioning, which is fantastic. We’re just not in a position to progress to contact, so the joint stability, the integrity of that needs to have improved and we’re not at a level where it has, and that’s a really important part of making this decision to progress to contact, the stability around the SC Joint. So at this stage, we’re still in the same situation that we can do a lot of training around it but we can’t do contact and if we can’t do contact training, we can’t play, so that’s frustrating. But Will is a professional, he’s doing everything he can and he’s certainly working really, really hard on his game. If you were out here today, he’s doing some non-contact football drills, he looks fantastic, but we’re just not in a position to progress yet, unfortunately.”

Cam Mackenzie (hamstring) – 1 week

“We go back to last Wednesday, our main training session before the game on Friday night, Cam was doing some stoppage work and took three to four quick steps out of the centre circle and just noticed something in his hamstring, a tightness feeling, something he’s never felt before. He was sort of stretching and went again and then realised that something wasn’t right so he came over and reported it to us. It was a little bit of a surprise to us, given that action that he does, he’s probably done it about 500 times in his last two years with us and he has no injury history at all with us, so it’s really unfortunate. We sent him for a scan and he’s got a really low-grade hamstring strain so initially on scan, we thought this could turn around in a week but it’s probably going to be more like two weeks at this stage. He’s already back running, he’s running at 50 per cent speed. We just haven’t got enough sessions this week for him to turn it around for this weekend. He’ll keep progressing, we’re fairly confident this will progress quickly but at the same time, we’ll be really smart with what we do and how we progress.”

Sam Frost (foot) – season

“Yeah, it’s really disappointing for Frosty. Late in the game, he reported to our physio Andrew Lambart that his foot was getting sore. It got to a point in the game with a couple of minutes to go that we were able to get him off the ground. He was quite sore, he was hobbling a little bit and limping so we had to do some follow-up scans on Saturday and those scans didn’t turn out in our favour and his favour. He has a stress fracture in his foot. We have to respect it, we can’t push through it, we can’t do anything else to keep him going unfortunately, it has to be offloaded. He’s in a moon boot at the moment and even in the moon boot, he’s quite sore and he can’t take much weight so unfortunately, his season is done. It’s really disappointing for Sam but he’s around today and he’s getting around the playing group. He’s being super positive, he’s been such a leader for us this year and he’s obviously had a great season so we’ll go through that rehab phase and look at what’s next for Sam but in the meantime, he’ll be helping us from a leadership point of view this weekend.”
