Congratulations to Danielle Green: Former Notre Dame Player and Iraq War Veteran Wins Pat Tillman Award for Service at ESPY Awards
LOS ANGELES — Danielle Green, a former Notre Dame women’s basketball player, Iraq war veteran, and Purple Heart recipient, has been honored with the prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2025 ESPY Awards. Green, whose life has been marked by incredible resilience and service, was recognized for her outstanding contributions both on and off the court.
During her time at Notre Dame, Green was a standout player for the Fighting Irish, helping to elevate the team to new heights. However, her journey took a heroic turn when she enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Iraq, where she sustained life-changing injuries during combat. Despite losing her left hand in the line of duty, Green’s courage and determination have inspired countless individuals.
Now serving as a counselor for veterans in South Bend, Green continues to give back to the community, offering support to those who have served. Her dedication to improving the lives of fellow veterans has earned her this significant recognition.
In her acceptance speech, Green expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve both her country and her community, and emphasized the importance of mental health and support for veterans. “This award is for every veteran who has overcome adversity,” Green said. “We are stronger together, and it’s my honor to continue serving those who served.”
The Pat Tillman Award for Service, named after the former NFL player and Army Ranger, honors individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to service in the face of adversity. Green’s exceptional career and ongoing work with veterans make her a deserving recipient of this recognition.
