As of March 14, 2025, Sean Payton continues to serve as the head coach of the Denver Broncos, a position he has held since February 3, 2023.
In recent developments, the Broncos have made significant changes to their coaching staff:
Termination of Linebackers Coach Michael Wilhoite: Wilhoite was dismissed following his arrest on February 23, 2025, at Denver International Airport. The incident involved an altercation with a police officer, during which Wilhoite allegedly left his vehicle unattended and subsequently assaulted the officer. He was charged with felony assault, obstruction, and criminal mischief. Head Coach Sean Payton emphasized the seriousness of the allegations in announcing the decision to part ways with Wilhoite.
Hiring of Darren Rizzi as Assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator: The Broncos have appointed Darren Rizzi to bolster their coaching lineup. Rizzi, 54, reunites with Sean Payton, having previously served on Payton’s staff with the New Orleans Saints from 2019 to 2021. His extensive NFL experience includes a decade with the Miami Dolphins in various roles, including special teams coordinator.
These changes reflect the Broncos’ commitment to strengthening their coaching staff under Sean Payton’s leadership as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
