These teams are the Group of Five’s legitimate College Football Playoff contenders As the 2025 college football season approaches, several Group of Five (G5) teams have emerged as legitimate contenders for the College Football Playoff (CFP). The expanded 12-team playoff format guarantees a spot for the highest-ranked G5 champion, intensifying competition among these programs. Here are some of the top G5 teams poised for a CFP run:

Boise State Broncos (Mountain West Conference)

Boise State aims to replicate its 2024 success, where the Broncos not only qualified for the CFP but also secured a first-round bye after a 12-1 season and a second consecutive Mountain West title. Despite losing key players like star running back Ashton Jeanty, edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein, and leading receiver Cam Camper, the Broncos retain a solid core. Quarterback Maddux Madsen returns to lead the offense, bolstered by four of five returning offensive line starters, including potential All-American tackle Kage Casey. The addition of Fresno State transfer running back Malik Sherrod, who rushed for 966 yards and nine touchdowns in 2023, further strengthens their lineup.

UNLV Rebels (Mountain West Conference)

UNLV has been on an upward trajectory, achieving its first winning season since 2013 and earning a bowl appearance in 2024. The Rebels have demonstrated resilience, notably defeating Kansas and Houston. Despite the mid-season departure of starting quarterback Matt Sluka due to NIL disputes, backup Hajj-Malik Williams stepped in effectively, leading the team to a decisive victory over Fresno State. With upcoming matchups against Syracuse, Oregon State, and conference rival Boise State, UNLV has opportunities to bolster its CFP aspirations.

James Madison Dukes (Sun Belt Conference)

In just their third year at the FBS level, James Madison has quickly established itself as a formidable program. The Dukes posted an 11-2 record last season, clinching the Sun Belt title and securing a bowl victory over Air Force. This season, they have made a statement with a 70-50 win over North Carolina, showcasing their offensive prowess. With a favorable remaining schedule, James Madison has a clear path to an undefeated regular season and a potential CFP berth.

Navy Midshipmen (American Athletic Conference)

Navy is experiencing a resurgence, aiming for its first bowl appearance since 2019. The Midshipmen have been impressive, particularly with a 56-44 victory over Memphis, highlighted by quarterback Blake Horvath’s four rushing touchdowns. The team’s modernized hybrid Wing-T offense has been effective, making them a challenging opponent. Key upcoming games against Notre Dame and Tulane will be pivotal in determining Navy’s CFP chances.

Liberty Flames (Conference USA)

Liberty continues to build on its recent successes, finishing the previous season ranked No. 25. Currently undefeated, the Flames are led by quarterback Kaidon Salter and running back Quinton Cooley. While their schedule lacks Power Four opponents, an unblemished record could position them favorably for a CFP spot. The Flames will need to deliver convincing performances in their remaining games to strengthen their playoff resume.

As the season unfolds, these G5 teams will be closely watched as they vie for a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff, exemplifying the depth and competitiveness within the Group of Five conferences.
