Ayoka Lee and Serena Sundell: Pillars of Kansas State Women’s Basketball
Ayoka Lee and Serena Sundell have left an indelible mark on Kansas State University’s women’s basketball program, each achieving milestones that underscore their exceptional talent and dedication.
Ayoka Lee: Dominance in the Paint
Standing at 6-foot-6, Lee’s presence in the paint has been formidable. In December 2024, she surpassed Kendra Wecker’s career scoring record, becoming the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer with 2,334 points. Lee’s contributions extend beyond scoring; she holds school records for career rebounds (1,118) and blocks (310), and set the NCAA single-game scoring record with 61 points against Oklahoma in January 2022. Her consistent performance earned her All-Big 12 honors, including a unanimous first-team selection in 2024.
Serena Sundell: Orchestrating the Offense
As a point guard, Sundell’s vision and leadership have been instrumental in the Wildcats’ success. She achieved a triple-double in December 2024 against USC Upstate, marking the first such feat for K-State in 15 years. Sundell’s season averages of 11.9 points, 5.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, coupled with a 53.5% field goal percentage, highlight her efficiency. Her performance earned her All-Big 12 First Team honors in 2024.
Shared Accolades and Impact
Both Lee and Sundell received honorable mention All-America honors from the Associated Press in March 2025, marking the first time since 2004 that multiple Wildcats earned such recognition. Their leadership propelled K-State to a 26-7 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, where they secured a first-round victory against Fairfield.
Legacy and Departure
Lee’s decision to utilize an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Sundell’s consistent growth have been pivotal in elevating K-State’s national profile. Their departure signifies the end of an era, but their legacy will inspire future generations of Wildcats.
Looking Ahead
As K-State women’s basketball transitions post-Lee and Sundell, the program aims to build on their legacy, fostering new talent to continue the pursuit of excellence.
