BREAKING NEWS: Quarterback Showdown at Notre Dame — Angeli, Minchey, and Carr Battle for Starting Role

The battle for Notre Dame’s starting quarterback job is officially underway, and it’s heating up fast. As the 2025 season approaches, three talented signal-callers — Steve Angeli, Kenny Minchey, and CJ Carr — are locked in a fierce competition to lead the Fighting Irish offense.

Meet the Quarterbacks

Steve Angeli

The most experienced of the trio, Angeli enters as a redshirt junior with 21 games under his belt. He’s seen action in high-pressure moments, including the 2023 Sun Bowl and last year’s College Football Playoff semifinal. Angeli’s strengths lie in his consistency, game management, and short-range accuracy.

Kenny Minchey

Minchey, a redshirt sophomore, brings athleticism and creativity to the quarterback room. Known for his mobility and ability to make plays outside the pocket, he offers a dual-threat dimension. While still refining his deep passing game, Minchey’s upside as a dynamic playmaker can’t be ignored.

CJ Carr

A redshirt freshman and former top recruit, Carr missed last season due to injury but has bounced back strong. In spring practices and the recent Blue-Gold Game, Carr flashed a big arm, sharp decision-making, and impressive pocket presence. Many view him as the future face of the program.

Spring Game Takeaways

During the Blue-Gold Game, Carr arguably stole the show, completing 14-of-19 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Angeli and Minchey also had solid showings, with Minchey highlighting his mobility and Angeli providing his usual steady hand. Still, the coaches aren’t ready to name a starter.

Coach Freeman Weighs In

Head coach Marcus Freeman has made it clear — there’s no front-runner yet. All three quarterbacks will continue splitting reps this spring and summer. “We’re going to let this play out. Whoever gives us the best chance to win will start,” Freeman said.

What’s Next?

With the transfer portal window open, speculation is swirling. It’s unlikely all three will stay on the roster once a starter is named, making this one of the most closely watched position battles in college football.

Stay tuned — the Irish QB future is up for grabs, and the stakes have never been higher.
