BREAKING: Notre Dame Head Coach Marcus Freeman Arrested in $6.8 Billion Fraud Scandal

South Bend, IN — April 20, 2025

In a shocking turn of events, Notre Dame football head coach Marcus Freeman was arrested early Sunday morning in connection with what federal investigators are calling one of the largest financial fraud schemes in U.S. sports history.

Freeman, 39, was taken into custody at his home by agents from the FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), following a months-long investigation that uncovered a $6.8 billion web of fraudulent financial activities allegedly linked to the coach.

According to officials, Freeman is accused of orchestrating a complex scheme involving offshore accounts, fake investment firms, and misappropriation of funds tied to booster donations, NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals, and private capital from high-profile Notre Dame alumni and investors.

“This is a case of extreme deception and abuse of trust,” said U.S. Attorney Rachel Simmons in a press conference held in Chicago Sunday morning. “Mr. Freeman used his respected position to exploit financial relationships and launder funds under the guise of university-endorsed initiatives.”

Notre Dame has not yet issued an official statement, but sources within the athletic department say administrators were “blindsided” by the arrest. A university spokesperson confirmed that Freeman has been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of the investigation.

Freeman’s legal team released a brief statement denying all allegations, stating, “Coach Freeman maintains his innocence and looks forward to clearing his name. These charges are without merit and based on misinterpreted data.”

Freeman, who took over as head coach of the Fighting Irish in 2021, recently signed a lucrative contract extension through 2030 and led the team to a College Football Playoff appearance earlier this year.

He is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail and is scheduled to appear in federal court on Monday.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
