
JUST IN: Tragedy Strikes – Alabama A&M Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant and Family Killed in Car Accident
In a heartbreaking tragedy, Dr. Paul A. Bryant, the Director of Athletics at Alabama A&M University, and his family have tragically lost their lives in a car accident late Friday evening. The fatal crash occurred on Interstate 65 near Montgomery, Alabama. Dr. Bryant was 53 years old.
Dr. Bryant, who took on the role of Director of Athletics at Alabama A&M in August 2022, was widely respected for his leadership and vision. Under his guidance, the university’s athletics department made tremendous strides, including lifting NCAA sanctions and launching the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s first Mental Health Support Initiative. He was also a key figure in fundraising efforts to upgrade facilities and elevate the school’s athletic profile.
Before his time at Alabama A&M, Dr. Bryant held various leadership positions in collegiate athletics, including at Eureka College, Urbana University, and Sinclair Community College. His dedication to the field was recognized with numerous honors over the years.
In a statement, Alabama A&M University President Dr. Daniel K. Wims expressed deep sadness over the loss, saying, “Dr. Bryant was not just an athletic director, but a visionary leader, a mentor, and a cherished member of our community. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of working with him.”
A memorial service has been scheduled for next Thursday at Elmore Gymnasium on campus, with further details on public viewing to follow. The university has also set up a memorial fund in Dr. Bryant’s honor to support student-athletes and the athletics department.
