Alabama Defrauded of $6.7 Billion in One of the Largest Public Sector Scams in U.S. History, Officials Say
Montgomery, AL — Alabama is reeling after state officials confirmed that $6.7 billion in public funds have been siphoned off through a sophisticated and large-scale fraud scheme, marking what authorities are calling one of the most devastating public sector scams in U.S. history.
The scam, which may have been in motion for months or even years, allegedly targeted multiple government departments and involved the creation of shell companies, falsified contracts, and forged documentation to divert funds from state programs.
Governor Kay Ivey addressed the public in a brief but urgent press conference Monday morning, calling the situation “a crisis of trust, accountability, and oversight,” and vowed swift action to bring those responsible to justice.
“We will not rest until every cent is accounted for and every individual involved is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Ivey said.
The Alabama Department of Finance and the State Auditor’s Office are working with federal investigators, including the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice, to uncover the full scope of the fraud.
Early reports suggest that high-ranking officials or individuals with privileged access to financial systems may be involved. Several employees across various departments have already been placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
Public reaction has been fierce, with protests already erupting outside the Capitol. Many citizens are demanding transparency, resignations, and reforms in the state’s financial oversight mechanisms.
More details are expected to emerge in the coming hours as the investigation intensifies.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for live updates.
