LATEST NEWS: What will happen if he leaves? He is well known and

The San Francisco 49ers are in the playoffs for the third straight season, but as every fan knows, that doesn’t mean they’re immune to changes on their coaching staff.

Or in the front office.

Here’s the latest news and some of the implications if assistant general manager Adam Peters or defensive coordinator Steve Wilks secure jobs elsewhere during this hiring cycle.

• For the past few years, 49ers fans have assumed — or perhaps hoped — that Peters was the team’s general manager-in-waiting.

The Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers have both requested permission to interview Peters for their general manager positions.

• What might happen to the 49ers front office if Peters departs? If the Commanders hire him, Washington General Manager Martin Mayhew, who served as one of Lynch’s top lieutenants in San Francisco from 2017 to 2018, may be fired. Mayhew might return as an assistant general manager for the 49ers.

If something similar happens this year, Wilks’ targets could include quarterbacks coach Brian Griese, who has played a significant role in Brock Purdy’s development; Klint Kubiak, who will essentially take over Slowik’s role in 2023; and tight ends coach Brian Fleury, who has a large influence on the 49ers’ running game.

Observing the 49ers’ halftime operations last year revealed that Fleury wrote out the run plays while Kyle Shanahan scrawled the pass plays.

The main difference between last year and this year is that Ryans had established a relationship with Slowik. In 2017, both worked as defensive quality control coaches for the 49ers. Slowik later shifted to the offensive side of the ball, where he would compete against Ryans in practices. Wilks, of course, has just completed his first regular season with San Francisco.

So far, the Chargers are the only team to make a formal request for Wilks, while Shanahan stated that other teams have expressed interest unofficially.
