The Detroit Lions added tight end James Mitchell to their injury list Thursday, ahead of their Wild Card game against the Los Angeles Rams.
This means that all three Lions tight ends are currently listed as injured. On Thursday, Sam LaPorta gave reporters a positive update on his health, stating that he participated in exercises following practice.
Brock Wright, meanwhile, has fully participated in both practices this week after missing the previous three games due to a hip issue. If LaPorta is unable to play, the Lions will rely on Wright and Mitchell to cover the vacancy.
“We’re always going to do what those guys do best, no matter who we have out there. LaPorta has a slightly different skill set than the others, and, honestly, the rest of the league,” said Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. “He is great. So, if he can’t go, the other people will have to step up, and we may ask them to do slightly different jobs than we did with Sam.
“But it would be fantastic to have Brock back this week. He has quietly become a vital component of our attacking strategy in recent years.”
